Looking for a way to cut costs on Paper Towels? How about Napkins?

Well I don’t buy Napkins, but I do buy Paper towels, and I hate using a sheet for a very small spill or wipe. So what do I do? I use my saved up Fast Food Napkins!

Each time I have fast food they always give me more napkins than I need, so I just save them in a basket in my kitchen and always use them up before grabbing the next paper towel.

This will save quite a few dollars per month on your paper towel costs.

Savings Tip: I Buy coupons on eBay!

by Sarah on July 21, 2011

Wanna know a shopaholic secret? I buy coupons from eBay!!

So I didn’t even know this was possible until recently and now I’m addicted!!

I started selling various little things around the hose, movies, jewelry, etc on eBay just to earn some extra money on stuff I never use. Then I made $71. I decided that I wanted to buy something for myself and just typed in coupons. WOW!!

There are so many coupons on eBay. Basically people cut coupons and sell them in bulk for way cheaper than a clipping service. This is a great way to get a lot of a specific coupon you want. They usually sell in bulks of 10. The cool thing is, some coupons in the papers are regional but can be redeemed anywhere so this is a way to get coupons you can’t get yourself. Also some people sell coupons from blinkies that might not be at your particular grocery store, but can be redeemed anywhere.

Here’s what I’ve purchased so far:

  • $0.35/1 Dove Chocolate Bar (10 coupons) for $1.19 (I saved $2.31 after the cost of these coupons)
  • $1/1 Xtra Laundry Soap (10 coupons) $1.34 (I saved $8.66 after the cost of these coupons)
  • $1/1 KC Masterpiece Bar-B-Q Sauce/Marinade $1.66 (I saved $8.34 after the cost of these coupons)
So as you can see these will really help your budget. Be careful of expiration dates, most post in the details of the auction and pay attention to auction end dates, I had a ton of coupons I wanted to win that someone outbid me at the last second. (You got to be on it!)

So for me, selling a few items that I don’t use anymore and getting coupons to lower my budget has made a huge impact on my monthly expenses. I turned my un-wanted items into cash, just in a different way!

Are you looking for new but inexpensive ways to be romantic and date? I got a question from Alex, of Salt Lake City, Utah:

“Hey Sarah, I’m looking for something fun to do with my wife, but were only on 1 income right now so I was hoping you could help me think of something not too expensive. I want to show her how much I care besides just telling her. Any Ideas?”

Well, that inspired this post, here are a few ideas I thought about.

1. Nice Stroll and Picnic- it’s a long standing notion that women love “long walks on the beach,” you’ve heard that before. If you don’t live near a beach stroll around a lake, or a park. Walk and hold hands. :) (There is nothing like holding hands with the man that you love, trust me) Add a picnic, make up some sandwiches and bring a blanket and stop and eat, watch the sun set, or kids play in the park. Show that you put more thought into it besides just a walk. :)

2. Museums or Zoos- I personally love animals and I have been itching to go to the zoo. We finally went for 4th of July. It’s fun! Discover new things with your mate, stroll through and make games with each other. You learn a lot from a person by the way they take in art and scenery. I found out most museums have Free Days. (A local museum in San Jose, does 1 free Sunday a month, it happens to be this Sunday, so we’re going) Also sometimes they have loyalty clubs, example- if you’re a Bank of America customer you get in free. :) It pays to check into things like that.

3. Movie Time- Movies are a long standing traditional date. Go a little early, or catch a Sunday show that will shave off some of the costs. Look into community events. A lot of cities have “Movies in the Park” where they show an older movie at a discounted price. Also- the library! Usually libraries rent movies free, find a nice romantic video and bring it home for date night at home. Free style!!

4.Go to your special place- Whether that is the place you first met, kissed, used to live, wherever has sentimental value to the other person. Take them there. Make it a surprise or a scavenger hunt. Make them guess where there going and throw them off track. Surprise them.

5. Catch a local Show- some amateur places like improv comedy clubs or local theaters have performances very cheap. It might not be anyone you ever heard of but all the celebrities started somewhere. Pick a theme or show they might enjoy.

A few ways that you can show that you care…

  1. Write a poem or letter (this is still something women LOVE)
  2. Do something you know they will notice. (If she cooks every night, cook for her)
  3. Turn on music and slow dance in the living room :)
  4. Write little post it notes about the things you love about her and place them all over the house for her to find.
  5. Recreate your partner’s favorite romantic movie scene. Be creative :)
  6. Declare your love, very publicly. (write a note on facebook or twitter- so all her friends can see)
  7. Send a free e-card
  8. Make a scrapbook with photos, mementos, and little notes from your lives together. (be creative)
  9. Read a book/play a game together.
  10. Learn to sing their favorite song, and perform it! :)

Hopefully this helps. Just a few ideas. What are something you’ve done or plan to do? Share!!

Savings Tip: Dryer Sheets- Go Farther!!

by Sarah on June 24, 2011

Want to make your dryer sheets last longer? Cut them in half!! There is so much scent and usage in each sheet that you can actually cut them in half and use 1 whole sheet on two loads. I store them in ziploc bags once their cut so that I can lock in the scent. (Do you ever smell the scent escaping from the box? It makes me nervous and I don’t want any to escape so I lock them up tight :) )

It’s a very frugal idea, but it will make them last twice as long. So the two 40ct sheets I just got, will actually be 160 Sheets! And since I only use 1 sheet per load, that is a lot of laundry!!

Happy Saving!!

So I saw two deals today, and it made me think of an EXCELLENT Savings Tip for you on comparing sizes of items by price. (Keep in mind I am not brand conscious)

At WalMart- 36ML of Dish soap for $1.98

At The Dollar Tree- 25ML of Dish Soap for $1 (Sun brand)

Which is the better deal? The best way to figure it out, it to break it down to the cost per mL.

WalMart is $0.055

Dollar Tree is $0.04

So you can clearly, see that even though the WalMart bottle was larger, when you break it down, it was still cheaper to get the 25mL at the Dollar Tree. (Which is what I did :) )

**Side tip** Keep in mind the bottles that are on sale at Walgreens, CVS each week for $0.89-$1 their usually only 10mL sizes (CRAZY SMALL) so always make sure to check the sizes when you’re comparing a deal.

Do you and/or your children love getting new movies and video games? There are cheaper ways to do this you know…

I’ll highlight a few different ways, you might not want to go super frugal but mildly frugal.

1. Netflix- probably one of the most popular ways to get new movies. Starting at just $7.99, you may also think about splitting the membership with a friend or two. It’s a great way to make it even cheaper. If you only use the instant watch then you can just authorize it on a few devices and share it with your friends/family.

2. Redbox/Blockbuster Express- Go pick up a DVD/BluRay of recently released movies for just $1 a night. They often give free codes so you can score movies free at times. This is good if you don’t want to commit to watching movies all month and only catch a few a month.

3. Gamefly- Starting at just $15.99/month you can rent as many video games as you like. This will save you on purchasing new video games as they come out. The average Playstation 3/Xbox 360 is $59.99/each so this could save you big. Especially if your constantly purchasing games.

4. Hulu/Youtube- You can catch some movies free on Hulu or Youtube. Hulu has a lot of lifetime movies and some older movies. Youtube has more of a variety but sometimes they’re put in parts/sections so you can’t just watch the whole thing through.

5. Library Card (FREE Video Games/Moves)- If you’re into waiting on movies/games you can actually score most movies and video games free at your local library. You’ll have to be put on waiting lists for the more popular items but can probably find older movies and games on the shelves. My local library has a ton of movies/tv shows on the shelves. But I do have to say I was shocked when I found out they have video games too!! Awesome!

What other ways have you learned to be frugal on Video Games and Movies? Share your tips.

So I’ve seen quite a few movies lately, figure I’d share my thoughts with you so that you could know what is worth checking out and which movies I recommend waiting or redbox!

The Hangover Part II- While, it had some amazingly off the wall funny parts, I was quite disappointed. The Hangover is actually one of my favorite movies and I was pretty disappointed with this part II/remake concept. I actually saw it twice, and I didn’t really laugh the second time. (I have seen the original about 20 times and laugh every time). I recommend waiting for Redbox on this one.

Bridesmaids- I was told that this was supposed to be the women version of The Hangover. Well not so much. Although it had the same type of humor, the plot was pretty lame and it got too mushy for me. I felt like it was way too much of a romantic comedy, and not a good balance of humor. Another Redbox!

Jumping the Broom- This was actually a fantastic movie to me. Although it was kind of predictable, it has humor, romance and great casting! Great twists and lots of funny moments. Although it’s about to exit theaters I would recommend seeing before it leaves.

Thor- Well to me this movie was garbage. HORRIBLE CASTING!! And to me the plot was just off. It reminded me of the movie Enchanted and I was half way expecting them to break out in song. Not so hot! A love story in the middle of horrible back and forth, not so hot. I don’t recommend, not even Redbox, wait till it hits TNT.

Fast Five- Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! I recommend, go now before it leaves theaters. If you liked the other movies you’ll love this sequel. So good. Great men to look at, and some nice women for the men. Nice Twists. Make sure to look at The Rock, he sweats through the whole movie, kinda funny if you look for it. Be sure to stay through the credits!! :)

Well that’s my take on the movies I just saw, what do you think? Different opinion on any? What others have you seen lately?

~Sarah
